Derventio eXcel will have further GB representation this summer with Molly Renshaw being selected to compete at the World Junior Championships in Dubai.

The biennial event, taking place from 26-31 August will see Molly going head to head in the 200m Breaststroke against the best junior swimmers from around the world.

Abbie wins 2 more medals on Day Two of EYOF

After claiming Gold in the 400m IM on the first day of the European Youth Olympic Festival in Holland, Abbie Wood had a busy second day of the meet with five races.

In the 200m Breaststroke final, she finished incredibly fast down the last 50m to overhaul her competitors to win her second Gold of the meet in a time of 2:32.87.

“To get the gold in the 200m Breaststroke was so great because it’s my favourite event,”  she said.

Less than an hour later, Abbie was just 0.14 seconds shy of claiming a third gold in two days as she touched second in the 200m Individual Medley final. She lowered her personal best by two seconds to set a 2:19.46 but after turning last at 100m and fourth at 150m, she couldn’t quite haul in Hungary’s Greta Szilvasi (2:19.32) in the dash for the wall.

“It was a very close race and I came back strong on my breaststroke but it was just not quite enough.”

Her final race of the day was in the Mixed 4 x 100m Medley Relay where, with Abbie swimming the Breaststroke leg in a 1:12.99 Brs split, the Great Britain team just missed out on the medals for a 4th place finish.

Derventio eXcel Swimmer ABBIE WOOD and DX coach KIM HILL have been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Utrecht, Netherlands from 14th-19th July 2013.

14 year old Abbie has been selected as part of a select 16 strong swimming team to compete against the best young swimmers in Europe as part of the Great Britain Youth Olympic Team.  The swimmers will be joined by other GB athletes ranging from 13 - 17 years old from sports such as Cycling, Judo, Tennis and Gymnastics.

This is the first International multi-sport event that these young athletes can compete in and gives them a taste of what it is like to compete in an Olympic arena.

Competition for the team was immense with only 16 places up for grabs on this small but select team.  British Age Group record holder Abbie gained selection for this event by achieving the selection criteria  in both the 200m Breaststroke in which she also finished 6th in the Senior category and in the 400m Individual Medley at the British Gas International Open in Leeds earlier this year.

Her coach Kim Hill says "I am very proud of Abbie.  She is a great girl with a tremendous amount of competitive spirit.  She always works hard and handled the pressure situation of the selection meet well.  I know she is now looking forward to the challenge of racing swimmers from around Europe, as well as meeting new teammates, she has a busy schedule but that is the way she likes it being in the thick of the action".

Abbie has an exciting summer ahead, straight after she gets back from the European Youth Olympics she will have a few days to refocus and recharge and will be off to Sheffield for the National Age Group Championships, where she will join with her Derventio teammates to compete in individual and relay events.  Then it will be off on a well earnt holiday.

DX at British Gas Swimming Championships

Last week 6 of Derventio eXcel swim squad's 7 British Championship qualifiers took part in the prestigious championships held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield over 5 days.

The cream of British swimming talent came together to race and the Derventio swimmers were right amongst them.

Molly Renshaw won a Silver medal in the Women's 200m Breaststroke breaking the National Age group Records twice in the process.  Molly posted a time that narrowly missed the World Championship qualifying time by less than a second, but has shown that she is still up their fighting at the top of the British rankings. This swim also put Molly for the 4th time inside the selection criteria for the World Junior Championships since March.. Molly also competed in the 50m and finished 10th in the 100m Breaststroke and 200m I.M.

Sarah Vasey was also on record breaking form in qualifying for her 1st British Championships final.  Sarah posted personal best times in the heats, semi-finals and final of the 50m Breaststroke breaking the Derbyshire Senior and Junior records twice at only 16 years old to finish 6th!  Sarah, who's focus is in the National Youth Championships in July also competed in the 100m Breaststroke posting near her personal best time.

Kane Haggett was the 3rd DX swimmer in finals action at these championships progressing to 7th place in the 50m Free in a time just .15 off his best time.  Kane later in the week also qualified for the semi-finals of the 100m Free finishing 14th.

One of the you gets competitions in the whole competition was just turned 14 year old Imogen Clark.  Imogen gained valuable experience racing next to some of Britian's 2012 Olympians, and showing this didn't phase her qualified in a personal best time for the semi-final and finishing 12th, improving on her rankings from the heats. Imogen is now looking forward to the National Age Group Championships which start 3 weeks tomorrow back in Sheffield.

Derventio also had two other Breaststrokers racing in the 50m Breaststroke, both Danny Anderson and James Latham competed on Day 1, posting near personal best times and getting fired up for the Nationalal Youth Championships which start a month today in Sheffield.
