Derventio eXcel (DX) and Derventio eXcel Development Squad (DXDS) trained swimmers were out in force last Sunday at the annual Derbyshire Sprints Competition. All swimmers who were competing for their home clubs had multiple races ranging from 50m to 400m and it was great to see all the swimmers swimming so well.
There were personal best times and medals galore.
DX swimmers who achieved qualifications for Olympic Trials and National Championships were:
Kevin Wallbank (Long Eaton) qualified for the Olympic Trials in March on his second event 200m Fly.
Kay Goulden (Long Eaton) qualified for the first time ever on the 200m Fly for the National Championships.
Lucy Wood (Buxton) qualified for her 3rd national championships in the 200m Backstroke.
James Latham (City of Derby) qualified for his second event at the National Championships in the 200m Breaststroke.
Abbie Wood (Buxton) qualifed for the Senior National Championships in 200m Breaststroke at the tender age of 12 years old.
Sarah Vasey (City of Derby) (100m Breast), Hannah Jones (Long Eaton) (100m and 200m Fly), James Latham (City of Derby) (100m Breast), Kevin Wallbank (Long Eaton) (200m Fly), Abbie Wood (Buxton) (100m and 200m Breast) all recomfirmed their previous qualifications for the National Championships set in October at the DX Short Course meet by also qualifying Long Course at this event.
The Derventio eXcel Hub Squads in Chesterfield and Buxton were launched earlier this month. These Hub Squads are Based at Buxton and Chesterfield and provide additional training in an enviroment that allows like minded individuals to train together towards common goals. These Hub squads bring about an expansion and are in addition to the current main Derby based central squad and allow swimmers from all over Derbyshire to access the performance pathway.
There were some great first time outings for new DX/DXDS swimmers who train in the main central derby based squad, and the Chesterfield and Buxton Hub squads for whom this was their first competition since starting to train with Derventio eXcel.

Matthew Holt (Ashbourne) from DXDS also won a championship in the 50m Breaststroke.
DX and DXDS swimmers are now looking forward to the Midland Short Course Championships and the team stay away meet at Leeds before Christmas.
