Derventio Dominates Regional Short Course Champs!

























British Records, Regional Records, County Records and Personal Best times were smashed as Derventio eXcel swimmers took to the waters of Corby International Pool for the Midland Short Course Championships this weekend to win medals galore.

26 Derventio eXcel swimmers took part in the championships and the swimmers from the Derbyshire elite squad proved they are a force to be reckoned with at all ages.

Derventio came away with no fewer than 46 medals! Which surpassed last years mark of 29 medals and then some.

The competition kicked off with BEN GOODALL winning a Bronze medal and smashing the nine year old county record formerly held by past Derbyshire Olympian Dean Milwain. Ben also went onto win medals in . Ben also took the Gold in the Junior 400m I.M and placed 5th in the Senior final and took the Junior Silver in the 200m Fly finishing 7th in the Senior Final.

JAMES LATHAM took the Hat trick of Junior Boys Breaststroke events winning Gold medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m Breaststroke. This included the swim off between himself and friend Joshua Winnicott from Birmingham for the Junior 100m Breaststroke Champion. James emerged the victor smashing his personal best time in a time of 1.05. James also finished 5th place in the senior final of the 200m Breaststroke. Showing his versatility and strength in all strokes James also won Bronze in the Junior mens 100m Free, 200m Free and 200m I.M.



DX Women swimmers took charge of the Breaststroke events and went 1, 2 in the 100m Breaststroke Senior and Junior Championships with MOLLY RENSHAW taking two Gold medals and Jodie Hawksworth taking two Silver medals. In the 50m event JODIE HAWKSWORTH swam a new county record to take the title in the Junior event and Silver in the Senior event with SARAH VASEY storming to Bronze in the Senior event and Silver in the Junior event. Derventio then went 1,2,3 in the Junior Womens 200m Breaststroke event with Molly Renshaw BREAKING HER BRITISH JUNIOR SHORT COURSE RECORD and smashing the regional Senior and Junior and County records in a time of 2.25.05 (subject to ratification), missing the Senior British record by 0.05. This performance also earnt Molly Junior performance of the meet. Her teammates Jodie Hawksworth and ABBIE WOOD took Silver and Bronze respectivley in the Juniors and Silver and 6th respectivley in the Senior events.

Molly also took Silver in the 400m I.M Senior and Gold in the Junior event, and Gold in the 100m I.M Molly took Gold in the Junior and Senior events in a new county record and Jodie took Silver in the Junior event. Molly also took Gold in the Junior 200m I.M and Silver in the Senior final.


KEVIN WALLBANK took Junior Mens Gold in the 200m I.M posting a new Junior mens county record and finishing 5th in the Senior mens final. Kevin also captured Junior Gold in the mens 200m Butterfly finishing 6th in the Senior final, and Junior Gold in the Mens 100m Fly and 50m Fly. Kevin also took Bronze in the Mens Junior 400m I.M, finishing 6th in the Senior final, which he then repeated in the 100m I.M final capturing the Junior Gold


In the Mens 200m Freestyle Kevin Wallbank took Junior Silver and James Latham Junior Bronze. MISCHA MENZIES smashed his personal best time to go 1.57.13 for the first time to add to his first sub 54 second 100m Freestyle this weekend.

HANNAH JONES took 2 medals, with a Bronze in the Junior Womens 100m Fly and a Silver in the Junior Womens 200m Fly placing 7th in the Senior final.

Sprint specialist and Club Captain KANE HAGGETT smashed his personal best time to take Silver in the 100m Free, and showed that he is a force to be reckoned with when he dominated the 50m Freestyle going sub-23 seconds in a new county record time and finished 6th in the 50m Backstroke.

LUCY WOOD took a Bronze medal in the womens Junior 200m Backstroke.


TYLER-ANN BLACK took Bronze in the Junior Women's 50m Fly, and Bronze in the 4 x 100m Free Relay.

Newcomer to the squad DANNY ANDERSON finished 7th in the Mens 200m Breaststroke Senior Final, and 8th in the 100m Breaststroke final.

All swimmers swam great swims this weekend and as a team were second to none, capturing more medals than any other team in the Junior section and holding their own in the Senior section also.

Other notable performances were:

KATHRYN ROWORTH qualifying for her 1st ever National Chmapionships in the 200m Backstroke.

National Times were also gained by Kevin Wallbank, Ben Goodall, Kane Haggett and Abbie Wood.

OLIVER DAVIDSON as the youngest in the field smashed his personal best in the 200m Backstroke leading from the front in a strong race.

SOPHIE CRITCHLOW in her first outing as a Derventio swimmer capturing a 2 second personal best time in the 200m Breaststroke.

EVE FARNSWORTH working her underwater to great affect in the Backstroke events going sub 1.04 for 100m for the first time ever and Silver in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay.

CHLOE JOHNSON posting several personal best times and looking strong, and in a range of events including Backstroke, Fly and Freestyle.

IMOGEN CLARK in her first ever regional short course event posting a 1.01.95 on the anchor leg of the Junior relay along with personal best times in the 100m I.M and 50m Breaststroke.

JESS CROSS and LEAH HOLLINGSWORTH competing in their first ever regional short course championships gaining personal best times in the 100m I.M

FRAN MARSHALL smashing her Butterfly best times and winning medals in both relay teams.

Derventio eXcel's Womens relay teams were also out in force winning the Bronze medal in a very exciting 4 x 100m Free were Frances Marshall, Molly Renshaw, Tyler-Ann Black with Womens Captain Evie Keane posting a 57.61 to move the team up to Bronze position.



In the 4 x 100m Medley Relay DX had no less than 3 teams out in force, with the A team of Eve Farnsworth, Molly Renshaw, Hannah Jones and Evie Keane winning a Silver medal in a new county record time. The B team of Lucy Wood, Jodie Hawksworth, Tyler-Ann Black and Fran Marshall just missed out on a medal finishing 4th. The Junior Team of Kathryn Roworth, Abbie Wood, Kay Goulden and Imogen Clark finished in 8th position and are certainly ones to watch in the future. Along with the 12 girls competing in the relays there were also several other swimmers on the side supporting who can make those relay spots, which demonstrates the strength and depth in the squad.
