Derventio eXcel Boy's Captain Chris Steeples has won the South Derbyshire Sports Person of the Year (Open) for 2010. This is testement to all the hard work and success that Chris has had over the year cumulating with representing GREAT BRITAIN in the Breaststroke events at the European Junior Championships in Helsinki in July, shortly followed by his Gold and Bronze medal winning swims at the British Gas Youth National Championships in August in Sheffield.
Chris, who has also won South Derbyshire Junior Sports Person of the year in previous years, has been selected onto the ASA England Talent Level 3, which is a national developmental camp for the countrys bright young stars of the future.
Chris who has recently finished his 6th form education at John port school in Etwall, Derbyshire has now decided to take a year out from studies to continue his training with DX before he goes to Univeristy.
Chris is also keen to give back to his sport. The AASE (Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) graduate is often seen mentoring and supporting other members of Derventio - Derbyshire's elite swim squad. He also recently attended as Guest of Honour, alongside the Mayor of South Derbyshire at his home club Etwall Eagles annual school gala organised by Head Coach Dean Howard. Here Chris met with the kids taking part, presented medals and posed for photos with budding young swimmers.
The South Derbyshire Sports Awards presentation will take place on October 14th.
