ABBIE WOOD Runner Up at High Peak Sports Awards!

3 Derventio eXcel and Buxton swimmers were shortlisted for their achievements this year at the High Peak Sports Awards. Emily Allsopp (former winner at this awards), Lucy Wood and Abbie Wood (pictured above).

ABBIE WOOD won the runner up for the Junior Sports Woman of the year in a very strong field won by GB Pole Vaulter Katie Bryers. Abbie was presented the award by Councillor Jean Wharmby and at only 11 years of age swam to a GOLD MEDAL in the 200m Breaststroke at her first National Championships, here she posted the 4th fastest British time ever recorded in this event. She also swam to a SILVER medal in the 100m Breaststroke and 5th place in the 400m I.M. This is just the start of her swimming journey and she is looking forward to next year.

LUCY WOOD (14) also shortlisted for this awards event. Lucy again at her first ever national championships won a BRONZE MEDAL leading off on the Backstroke leg of the Derventio eXcel's FAB FOUR relay team, and swam to personal bests to swim into the top 10 in the country on individual events. Lucy also captured Gold medals at the Regional Championships earlier in the year.

EMILY ALLSOPP (16), who was the winner of the Junior Sports Person Award in 2009 was also shortlisted for the awards. Emily has had a good year firstly capturing a Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for the Regional short course events in November, followed by 2 silver medals in relay events at the Commonwealth Trials along with her DX team mates. Emily has also had to juggle swimming with her GCSE exams this year in which she earned excellent results. Emily went on to achieve a clean sweep of silver medals in the regional long course events in her favoured backstroke events and relays, and has set numerous county records on the way to qualifying for an impressive 12 events at this years nationals, demonstrating her versatility in backstroke, freestyle, butterfly and medley events.

A big thank you has to go to Buxton and Leek Swimming Clubs, who by working with us have enabled us to allow these swimmers to continue reaching their potential and become 3 of the best swimmers in the country!
