Derventio's first competition of the season took place on Saturday 16 Oct at the Lincoln Open Meet, held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
The aim was to get our racing up and running for the season against some high quality competition from the likes of Loughborough University, City of Leicester and the hosts Lincoln Vulcans.
We came away as the 2nd top club behind a very impressive City of Leicester team and ahead of all other clubs - many of whom had far more swimmers in attendance, showing what great quality we had throughout our 32 entrants.
Kevin Wallbank was the joint Top Male swimmer of the meet, with Ben Goodall (8th), James Latham (10th) and Zichen Liu (20th) all making it into the Top 20 Male swimmers. On the girls side, Abbie Wood claimed 12th place in the Top Female swimmer of the meet.
With the National Qualifying Times for 2011 recently published, many swimmers were looking to gain QT's at the first time of asking and incredibly (with a big jump in the time standards this season) 9 DX swimmers made the grade:
1. Molly Renshaw 100m/200m Breaststroke (Youth + Senior), 200m IM (Youth)
2. Evie Keane 50m Freestyle, 100m/200m Backstroke, 100m Butterfly
3. Emily Allsopp 100m/200m Backstroke
4. Hannah Jones 200m Butterfly
5. Jodie Hawskworth 100m/200m Breaststroke (Youth), 100m Breaststroke (Senior)
6. James Latham 100m/200m Breaststroke
7. James Lovatt 100m Butterfly, 200m IM
8. Zichen Liu 100m/200m Backstroke
9. Chris Steeples 100m Breaststroke
All in all, the meet provided us with exactly what we needed. Several swimmers raced faster than they did at Nationals in July/August and many set PB's which are both outstanding achievements for so early in the season. Even those of you who were disspointed with your results will have gained valuable long course racing to build on over the coming weeks and months. Use the times you set as a base point from which to improve on at every opportunity from now until the end of the season.
