DERVENTIO SWIMMER ABBIE WOOD BREAKS BRITISH RECORD!!
Derventio eXcel Swim Squad played host to their annual February Festival
Open Meet competition last weekend, and with the reputation for running a
professional high level meet drew in over 7000 entries to the competition. The
line-up boasts no less than 11 Olympians from London 2012 including Silver
medalist Michael Jamieson and some great up and coming athletes too.A big thankyou must go to Richard Latham Meet promoter and all of the DX parents and supporters who as such a small group of people ran a fantastic High Quality meet!!
Derventio eXcel and Derbyshire Institute of Sport athlete ABBIE WOOD broke
the BRITISH and ENGLISH Age Records in the 200m Breaststroke in a time of
2.31.99! Abbie went out at a blistering pace, spliting in way under her 100m personal best time in 1.13.25. Abbie then dug in deep and used her skills to post this British best ever time!
The 13 year old broke her current Derventio and DIS teammate and long-time friend Jodie Hawksworth record from 2009, with Jodie cheering her on all the
Coach Kim Hill says “Abbie’s swim was amazing, I am so proud of her she
missed the record by .7 of a second in the heats and knew her chance was in the
final. It is a testament to her hard work and professionalism at such a young age that she
refocused and broke the record in the final! The focus of this block of
training is to compete well at the British Open in March so to get this record
is great!”.
Teammate and previous record holder Jodie Hawksworth says “I am so proud of Abbie, I have known her all her life and I am so pleased that if anyone was going to break my record it was Abbie. It was a great swim, and I have lost my voice from cheering so loud!”

To add to this, Derventio eXcel and Derbyshire Institute of Sport athletes Hannah Jones, Imogen Clark and Kevin Wallbank also achieved 4 additional qualifying times for the British Open Championships in March.
Two of their Derventio teammates Francesca Muir-Harris and Mischa Menzies also qualified for their first ever British Open Championships which puts Derventio eXcel with 14 swimmers qualified for the championships! This is a record number of swimmers qualified for this prestigious competition.
